Question:
What war uniform would this be? (Canadian?)?

I have a photo that may or not be inclusive of three of my ancestors. The faces are a little blurred so I can't be too sure.

It's a photo of roughly 28 men in uniform. They're all wearing the same thing except for one or two men in the back, who have different hats. The uniforms have four pockets, two on the chest and two on the sides. About 6 or 7 buttons run down the very middle. They're wearing hats that look a little like berets (they're worn somewhat on the side of the head and come to a point, like the ones in the middle of this picture: http://costumetemplates.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/caps-military.jpg) They're not Berets....total mental block as to what they're called. There looks to be a clip of some sort attached to the front tip of each hat.
Anyway, each pocket has one button (a button matching those that go down the center). There are two light stripes that extend from the collar to the tip of the shoulder on each side, and the light stripe looks to break and surround the collar with one tripe on the back of the neck and one on the front. The collar is like a crew neck, but they have some sort of collar or fabric that goes at least halfway up their neck.

They look like this only more buttons and a different collar/shoulder: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?app=core&module=attach§ion=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=80669

The men in the back are standing with their hands at their sides (except for a few men who were caught off guard and are talking), the men in the middle are standing on their knees with hands behind their back. The men in the front are sitting cross-legged or with legs extended with their hands intertwined at the knee.

The men are mainly Native, and my ancestors are Indians from Canada, born in the early 1800's so the photo would have to have been taken in the mid-1800's.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Go to Google images and look for

glengarry hat

then

overseas hat

I think you mean one or the other.

One of your links goes to what looks like WWII, the other to WWI, but I Googled "Boer War uniforms" in Google images and found examples of both.

If they were in uniform in the middle of the 1800's, it may have been the Crimean War, but that seems unlikely.

I don't BELIEVE that it is Canadian because of the rank. The Rank shows three "stars", but isn't of a cut or design that Generals usually wore in any country that I know of that uses "stars" as ranks for generals. Therefore I believe that it is a Captain's Uniform.

The Collar Brass shows crossed rifles which in many, if not most countries indicates Infantry. The Photo isn't however of good enough quality to get the image of what the rifles were crossed behind, nor the insignia badge detail on the Uniform.

If you go onto a forum like rootschat there is a military section where this type of question is asked all the time and there are 'experts' on military uniforms, medals etc etc there who will help............

I suggest rootschat as it is daily active and you are very likely to get answers to your question within hours rather than the years it can take with US forums like rootsweb which are just too big now to be useful as a forum

http://familytimeline.webs.com/apps/links/ if you go down the page you will find rootschat and other forums, also further down you will find a military section which also could help...............

Without actually seeing the picture, it is hard to tell what uniform it could be. Have you researched your three ancestors to see if any of them were in the service somewhere?

The picture of the uniform does not look like one from 1850 or so.
