Question:
Where to post locality-specific queries?

Back in the day, I used the GenForum message boards and Rootsweb mailing lists a lot, and always got so many helpful responses. Now GenForum is read-only and the Rootsweb lists are largely inactive. Where did everybody go? Is there another genealogy forum that I don't know about?

Really depends on where you are researching, the first website I would think of is rootschat, which has the different countries and is daily active there are not many questions that are not answered within the hour.

http://familytimeline.webs.com/apps/links/ under the 3rd section called "Forums, Message Boards and look up services" where there is a few

I found Genforum and Rootsweb just got too big and queries could end up on them for years before anyone added anything and even then often not specific to your inquiry.

This change to genforum is a real loss. I have used it all the time, by going to the surname and searching with key word like county name or other clues. SOME of the posts contained great info and leads. The posts still are there but NOT SEARCHABLE for that forum. Just because a post is 'old' or has no replies does not mean there is no value.

I am still subbed to several locality lists from rootsweb. And, I still will search their archives too.

The ones you call "Roots Web" are really Ancestry, I think.

http://boards.ancestry.com/

Some of them are more active than others.

They are free, although you must register. They have a board for each county in each state.
