There is a Sons of the American Revolution application, undated, National #72829, NY State #8484, from

Chester Arthur Garfield, b. 6 Jan 1881.

He claims his line is:

Leonard Dwinell Garfield, 18 Aug 1844 - 29 Dec 1919

Leonice Thompson, 15 Sep 1858 - 24 Aug 1947

Andrew Bliss Garfield, 8 Jan 1809 - 28 May 1894

Hannah Dagget Dwinell, 18 Aug 1808 - 3 Apr 1892

Moses Garfield, 7 Dec 1777 - 7 May 1859

Mary Bliss, 16 Jan 1781 - 4 Aug 1836

Joshua Garfield, 23 Dec 1751 - 6 May 1828

Abigail Rawson, 14 Nov 1755 - 15 Apr 1831

Josiah Rawson, 31 Jan 1727 - 24 Feb 1812

Hannah Bass, 12 Mar 1731 - 17 Feb 1814

Josiah Rawson there was a private in the Massachusetts "service". Exactly what regiment isn't stated.

You could poke around on RWWC,

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/

to see how far back you can get with both the Joshua b. 1754 and James, the president. You might find a common ancestor. Neither RWWC nor the SAR application are proof, just clues to be verified.

I think you need to go back further than Moses. Probably pre-Revolutionary War to find a common ancestor, if there is one.

There have been Garfields in Mass since the 17th century. If there is a connection, it is most likely very remote. Have you done any more research on your tree?

His name was James Abram Garfield born 19 November 1831 and died 19 September 1881 he had 4 siblings and lived in Ohio, his father was Abram who died in 1833/4 and his ancestry was Welsh ( British) his mother Eliza Ballou.............after 1854 he went to Massachusetts in 1858 he married Lucretia Rudolph and they had 7 children

You really don't look for someone in history and try to connect, certainly until you get a lot closer to the date and you are some way off that as 'Ansel Uberto Garfield' I am estimating was born around 1865, so you would need to go back to his father to get the same approximate date of birth years as James Abram Garfield

James Abram Garfield was the youngest in his family so census is not going to help you you need to look in Orange Towship Ohio parish records............he is buried at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland so look on finda grave and see what informtion is on there, there also maybe others who are researching http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=381 and have got RECORDS which you need to prove any connection....online sources mean nothing at all

You may want to try using www.ancestry.com. Put in what you know first and it will link up to any other family trees that may be in their database as well as many other sources.

They have a 14 day trial so enter everything first before activating the trial. Then if you choose you can decide if you want to purchase the program.

It takes all the family information the users enter and links them to complete the family trees as well as the official birth, death, tax etc records and lets you use it in your tree.
