I am asking for some new eyes to look at this "brick wall". Most of my sources for this are printed family histories by amateur genealogists, newspaper articles and public records. I can't find this family together in any census records. And no English or Irish birth records.

This is my great grandfather who I have pretty well documented from 1870 to his death - John William Brown b. 9 Dec 1849 possibly Liverpool England d. 29 Nov 1925 Tulsa OK. Per Census 1870 - 1895 in Cowley County KS. Married Eva Woolsey Later lived in Oklahoma

Father William Brown born ?? England d. 6 or 7 May 1864 Battle of the Wilderness per a Woolsey Family History - this is questionable since he would have been around 60. Family legend says someone (possibly John) served as a drummer boy in the Union Army so it is possible that a brother died in the war.

Mother Mary Ann O'Brien b. 15 Aug 1803 possibly Queens County Ireland d. 20 Aug 1905 Wichita KS. Per "History of Cowley County KS", had 13 children all of whom but John W died before she did. I have no record of any of these siblings

Marriage 16 Aug 1831 Manchester, Lancashire, England "England, Marriages, 1538–1973 ,"
Family immigrated per 1910 Census for John in 1851. Per bio 1855.

Any other records or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In the KS state census there is a question "Place from to KS...." and J W Brown in Crowley Co KS b. England has Illinois. IN 1875 has J.W. Brown age 25 B. England from IL then E.N. age 21 b. Iowa, from Iowa, an M.E. Brown age 18 b. NY from Iowa then 2 daughters M.E. age 3 yrs born KS, Mabel age 1 b. KS.

In 1895 census has J.W. Brown came form NY before KS, E.N. has b. IND and came form IND then Mabel is oldest in household b. KS.

So looks like John Immigrated from England with one sibling b. NY abt 1857. John was in IL or NY before marriage in KS, wife E.N. b. Iowa or IN and came from Iowa or IND before marriage, and M.E. Brown also came from Iowa but is not in J.W. household in 1890.

So have you looked at 1870 and 1860 census of IL, Iowa and NY for this Brown family?

Are you sure about mother Mary's birth date? Did she live to be 102? Did she and William migrate with John and the rest of the children?

this is not an answer to this question. but i have an answer to your question left a long time ago. i could not comment on it but had saved it. the man your aunt was dating back in the 50's was my father. his nickname was bob. he was born in philly and raised in brooklyn. he went into the navy. he was in the navy for about 30 years.

yes, my grandfather was also george vaughn horton who was a famous songwriter, one song in particular is 'mockingbird hill'. my father passed years ago... and so had my grandfather.

how i happened upon your question was my cousin who is also named after my father came across this question. he thought it was his name and then after reading it realized it was meant for my father.

my father was a ladies' man and was so handsome, blue eyes and dirty blonde hair, he looked like a lighter version of elvis presley with the hair and baby face.

please get back to me, about your aunt. is she still in new york? does she have any pictures? i have some pictures if she would like me to email to her.
