http://www.familysearch.org is a free service has a lot a information and records that can be accessed for free. My family is also based in the UK and I have been satisfied with the results. They have partnered many times with ancestry.com and findmypast.com to digitize records, so I am sure you will be able to find a lot there. But I guess free doesn't make the best present... good luck!

I've got a subscription to both and I prefer Ancestry, they've both got most of the census records 1841-1901 (although I suspect findmy past will have 1911 first). Findmypast has outgoing passenger UK lists, Ancestry has incoming, they both have random parish records.

I've only got English and Welsh ancestors so I haven't tried looking for Irish ancestors with either site.

So records wise they are pretty similar but I think Ancestry has a better search engine and is quicker and easier to use (findmypast tends to time out if you try and use too many variables, also the images take longer to load and you can only see one image at a time.)

I think Ancestry is also adding new stuff quicker that findmypast.

Anyway, both good but Ancestry would be my first choice.

I have Ancestry and have been pleased with the results.

However Findmypast has been given the 1911 census to transcribe, at the moment they are doing the London Area.

I have family In Yorkshire so joining findmypast for me now is not worth it.

When they get to Yorkshire and if I am still alive, I might buy some credits.

Everything will not be on one site.

However, having stated that, Ancestry does have one of the largest genealogy data banks available to the public and the annual subscription price is reasonable.

I like being able to research my family history in the privacy of my home, in my granny gown and slippers, as late as I want to stay up.

My dad uses ancestry and we've been able to trace back 150 years. It's really cool and easy to use (or so my dad says).

My friends used ancestry.com, but I myself use this one recordsdetective.com.
