I located the obituary for my great great grandfather and it states he was born in Nebes, Austria in 1862. I know that over time names of places change. I can't find where Nebes is or was located in my basic searches. If anyone knows, and any sites to reference, I'd be much appreciative. Thank you.

Nebes, Austria, it later became a part of Czechoslovakia.

Add: Politically/legally it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, you would have to research to find more information, like where the parents were born/lived, and then make an educated guess as it is difficult to know what people themselves identified as my best guess would be Czech

For this kind of question the GNS database is very useful. Go to

http://geonames.nga.mil/namesgaz/

Put "Nebes" in the name field, and adjust the associated pull down menu to "exact match", then click on "search database". The result will show you that its present name is Nedvězí in the Czech Republic, and what its GPS coordinates are, and links to two kinds of maps.

It is entirely reasonable for your ancestors to be Czech by modern thinking, and still be called Austrian in 19th century censuses, newspapers and the like, because what is now the Czech Republic was not independent back then.

Is it possible you're spelling it wrong? There is no such place listed, anywhere.
