There are shops online and at malls, airports and mail order that sell coats of arms and poorly researched surname histories to tourists. They are not trustworthy, if McLemore rhymes with Gilmore and they have that one, poof that's you and maybe the next shop has a coat of arms for Leamon that could be your too. The only way to be sure, and you probably wont have a coat of arms or else have many, is to apply to the heraldic authority in you ancestor's country of origin, currently the application fee is over $6,000 usd. Plus whatever research time it takes to find your ancestor's name. I find no McLemore in any of 6 armories that I checked, and some evidence that Gilmore might be a variation of McLemore but I would not trust a bucket shop. You made a wise decision to check it out before putting it on your body for life.

My maiden name is also German, & is a derivative of Kaiser. Your tattoo should definitely have a Crown at the top as your name is from the ruling family of Germany! My family crest has a very large head of a German Shepherd on it... Right side-Profile from the shoulder up, showing it with a very long neck, & head. The head is facing straight forward, stiff looking, with so much pride flowing from it that you can really feel it!!

Your name also comes from the Prussian section of Germany, famous for it's military heritage & history; so it would be great to research it, & work in a steel military helmet with a Germanic style artwork in it somehow!

I've tried to think how to explain this, but I'm having trouble doing it, so have tried sending you an email to get you a copy of your family crest to better explain it! The color red plays a great part in your family crest too.

Hope this helps!

Actually it means emperor, not king. King is Kö***. The Germans had a Kö*** and the Austrians had a Kaiser.

The Germans usually had bears, sort of lions, eagles, horses, ...

Type in "Wappen" at Google and look at a few pictures, maybe you find something you'd like to use.

House of Names is a surname product peddler.

They sell coats of arms like they belong to everyone with the same surname and they don't. Actually they don't belong to families but to individuals.

So don't be taken in by those people.

I have no idea on the design but I have a couple of suggestions, maybe find a tattooist and sit down with them and explain yours ideas, most tattooists are able to draw and design from ideas and so should come up with some. If not find a freelance graphic designer they may be able to draw something based on your thoughts to start you of.

If you are creating your own coat of arms, it should reflect you, unless you are connecting directly with an ancestor with a coat of arms.

Frequently, a coat of arms when originally created would include a pun on the name, for instance the Oldham coat of arms used owls (Owldhdam). For Kaiser, you could use the kaiser roll. Or with reference to ceasar a crown of laurel.

Or you could go with your profession. An admiral creating a new coat of arms, would likely have ships in his coat. Take a good look at several coats of arms and see what they mean, so you have an idea of what you should be using.

Remember you should be using a metal (color - gold, silver, etc) on a color or vice versa. You should not be using a color on a color.

The best thing to do is to sign up for free heraldic design assistance at the IAAH. They can design traditional arms for you based on your ideas, instead of quasi-heraldry by a tattoo artist or fake heraldry ffrom a surname coat of arms peddler on the web or at the mall. http://www.amateurheralds.org/
