I'm mainly a member of genes reunited and I have my great grandparents on both sides but the thing is I'm still unsure about how to find records. I don't seem to be able to get the hang of the cenus side. I look for birth, marriage, death records and enter the dates right but when I get all the records ( eg, jan-feb-mar , 1900 etc etc) but does this mean I have to search through all of the months of each year to find what I want? Or am I missing something? Can anybody help me with one of my unknown GGGrandparents records. Just to get me started?

You should try going to a Mormon family history center. They have lots of records. Some public libraries have librarians trained in using Census records.

I'm a member of Genes Reunited, although have never bought any credits there. If you put the name of your ancestor in the search box (section 3 of the first page), you can get a free census index, but you have to buy credits to get into the actual census entry showing other household members. The more info you put in the search, the more specific will be the info coming up.

In your question, you are talking about the BMD entries. This is the same as you can see in the indexes at the National Archives. Again I haven't done it through Genes Reunited, but I have Ancestry UK. There are 4 indexes per year, one for each quarter. I would guess, although I don't know, that you would have to use a credit for each one you look at, which could make it expensive if you don't know dates. On Ancestry, you pay a flat rate for the month/year, and use is unlimited. You have to look at each index. It gives you a reference number you can use to order a certificate at the online lesser rate of £7. The index entry you get on screen is not detailed, it only shows you the quarter of the year the event was registered, and the area. For marriages, you get a page up showing eveveryone married for that quarter in the area. You have to do some detective work to find out who married who, and you might end up with a lot of unwanted certificates.

I find it all very addictive, and once you start, you won't want to stop. Unfortunately you often come up with more questions than you can answer.

Looking at the information you gave there was no record I could find, so could I suggest you check your dates. 1952 seems very late for GGgrandparents to be getting married. It is possible of course but correct dates are important. I cant even do a census search for that date. You could try, if you live in the Doncaster area, look them up on the electoral roll for that time. Best of luck....Allan

Births, Marriage and Death records are recorded in quarter years.

Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, July-Sep, Oct-Dec.

So you may be looking for great Uncle Fred's birth and find

Smith, Frederick 1903 Jan-Mar Bloxwich Vol 3 Page 23

This is the reference to get his Birth Certificate. Once you buy a copy you will have his birth date and where he was born.

See http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Certificates.html

It's the same for all the certificates.

Were your ancestors immigrants? They may have this information listed on the Ellis Island web site. They took the names and ages of the persons entering this port and I think maybe the birthdates were listed too. Ask as much information as you can from your grandparents and parents or aunts and uncles. You may have pictures lying around in the attic or basement that would clue you in to dates and times, as most people would date the back of a picture. Hope this helps! :)

IF you don't know the person's birthday, and it's before 1984, you're going to have to check all four quarters for each year. If you don't find it, you'll need to check the years either side

can you give details of the ones you're looking for?
