Question:
Copy of a 1910 Passenger Manifest - Ellis Island?

I previously posted a similar question but did not get responses. I am trying to find the ACTUAL copy of the handwritten passenger manifest I believe my grandfather's information is written on. If you do the search on Ellis Island's website the incorrect passenger mani. fest is shown. I tried going forward & backward a few pages but it still was not showing the correct ship, sailing, etc. I am looking for the June 30, 1910 arrival in NY of Themistocles. My grandfather is listed as Evangelos (possibly Evaggelos) Baltatzis. Supposedly he is on line 27. I really want to see the actual handwritten sheet, not just the transcribed info. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

There is a glitch in Ellis Island's database which has never been fixed. Very often, the photographer of the pages missed his count by 1 page because they photographed the heading page and counted it as 0 instead of page 1. But if you look at the first page, where you found the name, date, etc, you'll also find the name of the ship, date, page and line number. If you click on the link, flip forward or back a page to see if you haven't just been brought to an incorrectly counted page. It's been that way since they brought the site up about 10 years ago and it's never been fixed. In this case, they've matched the entire wrong film to the passenger record links.

What you can do, though, is go through the nearest LDS Family History Center to request a copy of the actual film for arrivals in June/July 1910. The Themistocles should be on page 186-7 of that film. It would be much quicker that way than trying to get the Ellis Island Foundation to find the right film for you and send you a copy. Since they haven't fixed the problem in over 10 years, most of us are resigned to the idea that the problem is too big for them to control.

Some of the ship manifests don't correspond to where they should be on the actual films.

Go to Stevemorse.org that compensates for such mistakes.... and you will be able to track down the correct manifest....... using the various tools on that site. What you want is in the Ellis Island folder......

Added Note: You are wrong. If you went to the Ellis Island folder on the morse site, and choose the ships list utility, it would take you to the Missing Manifests portion. You can see manifests directly with this approach. However, so saying this, I tried to see the images for your ship. The morse site shows that it comes in on June 30, 1910, gives the roll, volume, and frame number, but cannot get there. So..... what I would do is to email Steve Morse directly. Explain the problem and that the Missing Manifest utility is not working, and ask for advice. Steve is at Roots Tech starting today, but he usually responds to such emails and likes these puzzles.

Added Note 2: Obviously, you didn't follow my advice, so I emailed Steve and asked about this situation. He found that Ellis Island apparently has changed the way they display Roll 1509, and thus Steve Morse's correction was not working...... it is now.

It looks like Joyce B found the ship's manifest info for you on Ancestry.com. She rocks!

You can view the image of the actual ship's passenger list on Ancestry.com by finding out which library in your public library system subscribes to the US Ancestry.com databases. It will probably be the main/headquarters branch. You will have to go to the library to access Ancestry.com for free. A reference/information can instruct you on how to access the proper database and find the ship's manifest image. Is is line 27 on the manifest.

DrJ gave you a great tip, too. Be sure to report the glitch to Steve Morse as he suggests. Getting the glitch fixed will help others in the future.

Best wishes

Get in contact by phone with Ellis island. They have all records on file. If the handwritten record exists they can find it. It will cost you though. If they find it and it is wrong then rejoice! Grandpa was an illegal like mine were!
