I think my ancestors owned slaves?

I'm feeling really guilty... My family was on Ancestry.com and on my fathers side during the 18th century my ancestors lived in Augusta County, VA and moved from New York (Kingston, and had previously lived in New Amsterdam from about 1633), and were of Danish and Dutch descent. They then moved to Canada in the 1780s. Is there a chance my ancestors owned slaves?

The families name was Hood, originating from the Dutch Hoed.

Of course there's a chance, but you'll have no way of knowing, unless you learn more about your ancestors. Were they wealthy? Did they own property?



That said, why are you feeling guilty? You are not your ancestors, you have no influence on their actions, and you have, presumably, done nothing wrong. I'm half Danish, this means that my ancestors might have gone viking, and might have owned slaves (the vikings had slaves) - or they might just have been regular farmers. Most people will have ancestors who did something bad if you go back far enough. The stone age culture e.g. in many places was pretty violent.



If you want to make a difference, then you could work towards ending modern day slavery, which is still a problem, especially in some African countries.

First off, just because your ancestors lived in 1700's Virginia doesn't necessarily mean they owned slaves. There were more commoners than aristocrats in Virgina back then, after all. Secondly, even if they did own slaves, so what? It was legal at the time, and besides their "sin" isn't yours. And for the record, such as it is on a site like this, I've got ancestors who were slave owners (some of them from 1700's Virginia, too) and I don't feel the least bit guilty about it for the reason I mentioned.

When you look at your ancestry you have to understand the society they lived in. Also many of those who cast stones at the old states of the confederacy had ancestors who were involved in the slave trade. A lot of New Englanders were and actually the ships for the slave trade were built in Boston Harbor.



While being owned by another person is wrong, not all slave owners beat their slaves and mistreated them. I had a great great great grandfather who he and his wife my great great great grandmother had 2 slaves. My great great great grandmother inherited them. When the elderly female slave had to be put into a home, my great great great grandfather visited her every day to make sure she was being taken care of properly. You have to realize she help them raise their children.. In cases like that there was a feeling of family connection to the slaves.



Don't judge people in the past by the standards of today. Also you might find worse things than slave owners in your family tree if you did the research. You descend from a lot of people. Get back to the 1200s and many people can by the time of their 20 something great grandparents. Don't remember the exact number. If each were a different person they would outnumber the population of the world at that time. Just think of the number of individuals from which you descend. Some were saints and some very outrageous sinners.

They could have but I don't believe you should feel guilty if they did. A lot of people owned slaves, heck, some slaves owned slaves. But the past is behind us, people from every community has moved on . Don't feel guilty over something your ancestors could've done long time ago

You THINK!!!!!. The best book on the Keeping of Slaves and it was a sort of how to get the best out of your Slaves by treating them well and fairly, not beating them etc was written by one of my ancestors and many of his brothers and descendants were slave owners and very rich. Had they not been then, in their absence, there might not be an America at all. It is history and what was then common. Do I feel bad about it?? Not at all.

Millions of persons in this country have ancestors who owned slaves. It is a simple historical fact, and was a normal part of life for that time frame. It is no longer normal or legal. It is not something you have any control over, or responsibility for.

History has to be objective.. meaning, not something you judge as good/ bad, (yes, slavery was bad), but it is a simple FACT. Guilt is not reasonable.

It is quite possibly and even probable that your ancestors owned slaves. Even small farmers owned at least one slave, or indentured servant. Do not understand why your feel guilty. It is a historical fact about a culture and it was accepted at the time.

Good chance they did. Look up the Hood Plantation 1700s Virginia. Quit a place it was. Also there were lesser family members who were small farmers & merchants, craftsmen. So you need know much more as you check you family out.
