Hello Mikey,

You cannot view any life event certificate on line or any where else. You cannot even go into a registry office and ask if you can look before you buy sort of thing that's why it's best to get as much information as possible from what ever source you use before you order.

I am pretty sure the price of a certificate is £7:00 from the area registry office, ordered in person or phone orders for these you don't need the GRO registration numbers. You can find the registry office from the BMD registers on www.ancestry.co.uk. If you order from the GRO as you have been advised, a certificate order without the GRO information would cost you £10:00 with the GRO numbers it will cost you £8:50. It can take quite a while to order from the GRO. They do have a priority service where as if you order before 4pm on any day they will despatch your order the following day. Its not cheap though. With GRO details £24:50 without £27:50. I really hope this helps you, good luck.

I noticed that Lawrence was born in the Jan/Feb/Mar quarter of 1901, the census for that year was taken Sunday 31st March 1901. So I did a search of the census using Lawrence's name as my research marker. I found him registered as being 2 months old and living with his parents John W Mosson aged 29 born abt 1872 and his mum Alice E Mosson aged 20 born abt 1881, Alice was born in Gresley in Derbyshire and John in Urmston Lancs. Their address was 19 Lorne Grove, Barton Upon Irwell. It was quite normal in those days for names and ages to get changed by the enumerator filling in the form hope this helps you.

Hi there is no site for viewing birth certificates but free bmd will let you see the registration details and then you can send for a copy of the certificate its £7 if anyone was born before 1901 the best way is to use a census search site like Ancestry.co.uk at a cost yearly or pay for view or Genes reunited annual subscription about £9 then pay to view census images or even cheaper send the details to ITV teletext page 834/5 on digital and ask for anyone with info you can also do this on messages boards on the sites above.

Right, here's what you need to do.

Go the the General Register Office site:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You will need the following info:

Lawrence Fletcher Mossom

Born 1901 (Jan, Feb, Mar)

Barton Upon Irwell, Lancs

Volume 8c

Page 684

This will cost you £7. They will send you a copy of his birth certificate.

His father's name will be on this if his parents were married. If they weren't, his mother's name will be on it.

If you want his marriage certificate as well the details you need are:

Lawrence F Mossom

Married 1928 (Oct, Nov, Dec)

Manchester South, Lancs

Volume 8d

Page 151

That'll be £7 as well.

Once you have his father's name you may well be able to track down more family members on the census records.

Good luck!

There isn't any place for public viewing - peoples birth certificates are private documents - do you have your own on the web anywhere, would you think it a good idea to keep private and not give easy access to fraudsters.

Perhaps there is a box of papers somewhere with all details of family members who have passed on.

If you want a copy for your own records, approach the Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages - that will be your best bet.

PS the information you have given could be used to impersonate by another.

Can't answer fully but a lot of these sites only give you the bare outlines and if you want more detailed information you have to pay for it....Much like if you went to the Public records Office....its yet another money making venture of what are after all public records.....spend some time at the Public records office if you can...I did, its a trail as I live in the North, but worth the trip, be prepared to look through loads of ledgers, and if you find what you want you can get a copy but have to pay for it.

Birth, death and marriage certificates are obtainable from the registrars office, they cost £7 each, this can work out expensive for a few, unfortunately, this is the only way to get hold of the relevant certificates.
