like.....Joe Jones has a son, and names him Joe Jones Jr.

Dad then becomes Sr.

Jr can have a son......Joe Jones III

III's son......Joe Jones IIII

Dad is the 1st

Jr. the 2nd

and so on.

That was a typical scenario. It was meant to be as one duplicate name per generation. The Sr. would have been the one to have found his fortune and therefore continues his own name down the line.

Today though, I've seen families with two sons the same name. The eldest being Jr, and the younger being III.

I've always thought that Jr and Sr are for father and son. If a child is named the exact name as a grandfather or great grandfather, he would be the second. It depends how many generations are in between. You see this especially with royalty.

Sr., Jr., III, etc (Jr. is second).

I have been told that the proper use these days is to be applied only to those currently alive. So if Sr. dies, Jr. becomes Sr., the III becomes Jr. etc.

It only works first off if the son has the same first AND middle name. Then it goes you have the Senior and then Junior or can be called the second (II) then it does go third (III) fourth (IV) and so on.

It's Sr and Jr while dad is still alive and then Jr. becomes the 2nd.

It can be any of those, depends on how many people in the family have that name.

Are family has both a Jr. and a II in it.
