Family Tree Nightmare?

Question

Hi All,I wonder if there is anyone who can help me with this stinker.
Frances Maria Rand born 1833 in Greenwich married John Tantony in 1852 in Greenwich (although Ancestry says her surname is Rann)They have several children and appear on various census returns as Tantony/Tantoney/Tantany.

This is where my problem starts They have George c 1868.... Mary Ann c1860.... Matilda c1866..... Maria c 1856 ....James c 1863 .....John c 1858 and Phoebe c 1853...
I cannot find any Registered Births for any of these children.
I know some of you wonderful folk love a challenge so I would appreciate any help ...

I have a Rand connection in my research married to/ connecting with the surname TANT. Tant is sometimes listed as Tanton....so try the ESSEX area.

Hi, I have spent some time having a look for you.



I have found the family as have others in the1861 Census, with the census showing that they were all born Greenwich, Greater London, and yes John snr, was a Mariner.The family at that time were living at 4, Billingsgate Street.



In 1871 however, Frances Maria had previously died in 1870.The person who wrote the records for the death certificate wrote the name as Tantany.

In 1871, John Tantony snr, then stopped being a Mariner, and became a labourer in order to look after his family it seems. By that time Pheobe went to wrok as a servant. Address at that time 26, Church St, Greenwich.





I then find in 1881 John Snr, living as a lodger on his own, with the rest of the family obviously flown the nest.



You are quite correct about the birth certs info is not there. I cannot find either.



Perhaps, one day you need to make a trip to London to track down the information you need in person.

Wow, I've spent a while looking and I'm stumped! I've found the marriage and the census entries but the kids? Nothing.



In 1861 they have a 5 month old and I've looked at the indexes for Mar 1861 and Dec 1860 and no Mary Ann Tantony.



I notice he was a Mariner and I wonder whether that might have anything to fo with it?



EDIT: I'VE FOUND ONE - sorry for shouting!!!

There is nothing in the birth index for Dec 1865, Mar or Jun 1866 but if you were able to look at the original Baptism record it might shed some light on where she was born. If you are in London you can try going to the church or you can try your local Church of Jesus Christ...

Scotland's people fantastic site also if you know which area of Glasgow you can look up old parish records another good site is family search org i used both of these sites and traced my tree back to 1700 good luck

If you think they may have been born at sea or overseas findmypast.com have indexes of those births.



Unfortunately it only shows the range that the name may be in and then you have to pay to view whether or not the name is actually listed.



Anyway I had a look at one to see what it would show and here is a link to the image- sorry no Tantonys though.

I'm afraid I can't help with the registered births, but it is likely these children were christened, why not contact the parish church and ask about archives? They will almost certainly be willing to help out.
