My last name is Strub, and although it is German, i am not German myself. The surname my family had before that was Strul, and was changed when my family came from Eastern Europe. When they signed the document, the name looked like Strub, and not Strul. I am curious to know what both Strul and Strub mean. As i said before, Strub is German, and Strul is either Russian, Polish, or Yiddish. Post translations or good name translation sources please.

Strub Name Meaning

German: nickname for someone with stiff, bristly hair, from Middle Low German struf, Middle High German strup ‘unkempt’, ‘rough’. Compare Struve.

They don't have a meaning for Strul.

Be careful with those 'the officials changed our family's name' type stories, quite often they are not true.

I wonder if the name Strul had Jewish connotations and they changed it a little to make it sound less Jewish. I had people in my tree that changed Levi to Lever (and a whole load of other names) to avoid prejudice.

Strul is Swedish and means 'tangle' or 'hassle' ................. IF your story is true and that same story is told many times by people as they pass the story down the family, each adding their own slant on it............. it is your families oral history and so importnat to document, who told you when and what they said.....then forget it as it is unlikely to be true, instead research and 'if' you look at the records as you go back you will soon see if this way likely and if the name was different...........you will also find where the family came from.................. and although the interenet and database websites have made it 'easier' to look for ancestors now, this type of research is made much more difficult as many records are only in transcription form and not image so people never look at records and so can build their trees without the correct research...........................
